Speaker: Tommy Flanagan, the Pathological Liar

Yeah, that's the ticket!

Context

This line is spoken by Tommy Flanagan, the Pathological Liar, played by John Lovitz, on Saturday Night Live (1975- ).

Tommy Flanagan is a man you want on your side, if only because his terrible attempts at lying will distract anyone from what you really did. Married to the gorgeous Morgan Fairchild (or so he claims!), Tommy Flanagan is the most important man you haven't yet met.

Perhaps that's why he decided to represent Oliver North, beleaguered Colonel of the Iran-Contra affair, in one memorable Weekend Update segment of SNL. The only person who lied more than North in the '80s was Tommy Flanagan, who, when he was really proud of himself, called out, "Yeah, that's the ticket!"

Where you've heard it

"That's the ticket" is an old saying (dating back to the early 19th century), which basically means "that's right" or "that's perfect." You've heard this if someone is really proud of themselves, whether they're lying or not. But usually they're lying.

Lovitz compared his famous fictional liar with famous real-life liar Brian Williams. Yeah, that's the ticket!

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

A person saying this could never sound pretentious, right? Hey, would we lie to you?
