Jacob challenges Sam to take away his choice. Do you think he intends to show Sam that he can defy his orders? Or does he hope Sam might be able to have control over him and take away his choice, as well as his pain?

Jacob's feelings suggest that making choices in life gives you freedom, but also instills in you a certain kind of insecurity or loneliness with this independence.
