- Ifé returns from the cemetery with coconuts, which she shares with Sophie and Eliab (and the pig).
- Ifé points out lanterns moving in the distance. She explains to Sophie that a woman must be in labor. If it's a boy, a lantern will burn in the night. If a girl, then nothing.
- After a while, the lantern is extinguished—a girl has been born.
