Breath, Eyes, Memory Book 3, Chapter 22 Summary

  • In the morning, Ifé leaves to pay respects at Dessalines' grave and Atie stays behind with Sophie. Sophie asks if Atie will miss Louise when she goes. The answer's pretty obvious.
  • Ifé returns from the cemetery with coconuts, which she shares with Sophie and Eliab (and the pig).
  • Ifé points out lanterns moving in the distance. She explains to Sophie that a woman must be in labor. If it's a boy, a lantern will burn in the night. If a girl, then nothing.
  • After a while, the lantern is extinguished—a girl has been born.
