Character Analysis
Raul might come from a humble background, but he has a whole lot of confidence. Not only can this boy draw, he's convinced he's going to be the next great Latino artist:
Anyway, it's good for [Mr. Ward] to help out the future Diego Rivera. He knows I'm the real deal. Didn't he come to me for advice on how to decorate the classroom? The paper frames were my idea. Good work belongs in a gallery, I told him. Especially if it's mine. (8.9)
Raul is following in his grandfather's footsteps. He was also an artist but never did anything about it—it's hard to feed a family with leftover paint. But Raul is determined not to let his dream die. Nothing is going to stop him from achieving everything he hopes for and more. Way to shoot for the stars, Raul.
Raul even helps Diondra come out of her artistic shell a little. Since Raul is such an out and proud artist, it means a lot to Diondra when he compliments her work. Raul wants to learn from others, but he also wants to boost everyone up. You won't catch any negativity from this kid. We knew we liked him.
