Chronicle of a Death Foretold Chapter 3 Summary

  • The lawyer declared Santiago's death a case of homicide in legitimate defensive honor, which basically means it was okay that they killed him because they were defending their honor.
  • That's what it seems like on the outside, but according to the narrator, the twins didn't really want to kill Santiago. It's just that they failed in getting anyone to stop them.
  • First of all, they went to the one place that Santiago was probably never going to go. After that, they went to their home and got their knives but spoke so loudly that the 22 people nearby heard everything that they said. Twenty-two people. Finally, they just outright said that they were going to go kill Santiago, but no one paid attention or did anything to stop them. How hard is it to get in trouble in this town?
  • The one person who thought something was odd was the butcher, Faustino Santos, who told a policeman what he heard.
  • From now on the novel is going to sound a bit like a deadly game of telephone, so be prepared for a lot of names. The policeman tells the Colonel Lazaro Aponte, and he takes his time before doing anything.
  • Finally, after having breakfast, the Colonel walks down the street to where the brothers are waiting. Instead of arresting them, he just takes away their knives.
  • The problem with that is they have to keep trying until someone stops them because they are defending Angela's honor. Plus, did he totally forget that the brothers are pig slaughterers? We're sure they have way more than two knives at their disposal.
  • By the time the bishop arrives, everyone knows about the murder plot. Well, everyone except for Santiago and his mom.
  • The Vicario brothers go back home to get some more knives, and after an argument, head back out to kill Santiago.
  • They stop by Pablo's fiancée's home for a while, and then head back to the same milk bar they were hanging out at before. Clotilde tries to get them drunk again, but it still doesn't work. They are just waiting to see when Santiago gets home.
  • Little did they know that he was already in bed. After chilling with the narrator at Maria Alejandria Cervantes' place until three in the morning, Santiago gets kicked out for wanting to play dress-up with the prostitutes.
  • So instead they head over to the newlyweds' place (where Angela has already been taken back to her home) to serenade them. After that, Santiago headed home.
  • Meanwhile, several people tried to warn him and fail. Either that, or they think that he's already dead. Everyone is drunk and no one is acting reasonably.
  • This chapter ends the same way the first one did. With the death of Santiago Nasar. You saw it coming, didn't you?
