Gemma thinks that Alex is just another teenager when she first meets him—albeit a ridiculously attractive and intriguing one—but it soon becomes clear that he's a Keeper who has been sent to guard her against the Death Walkers, those ice demons that are always following her around in her dreams and in real life. Under Alex's guidance, Gemma learns that she has a star's power inside of her and that she needs to stay safe in order to stop the world from ending. He protects her and fills in some of the gaps about her past (although not all).
