Freak the Mighty Theme of Isolation

At the beginning of Freak the Mighty, Max wants nothing more than to be left alone. Actually, that's kind of an understatement. Max knows that if you don't get close to anyone, then you can't lose anyone—so he stays away from everyone. And then along comes Freak, breaking Max out of the down under and out of his safety bubble of isolation.

Questions About Isolation

  1. How is Max's feeling of isolation different from his mom's feeling of isolation? Are they at all related?
  2. Why do Max's grandparents let Max stay in the down under for so long?
  3. Why does Freak try to pull Max out of his hole in the down under? Is it intentional? Does he just want a friend?

Chew on This

Try on an opinion or two, start a debate, or play the devil’s advocate.

Max isn't isolating himself from the world. He's flat out hiding from it. That's right—he's scared.

Max and his dad are similar in how they try to remove themselves from society.
