Treaty of Ghent: Section 6: Fifth Article Summary

Riverfront Real Estate

  • America and Britain dispute ownership of lands around the border of Nova Scotia and the (then) northwest part of the United States.
  • The lands in question border several rivers: the Connecticut, St. Croix, and Cataraquy. The problem is, no one has bothered to survey the lands.
  • It's the same story as Article Four. To survey the disputed land, two morecommissioners are appointed.
  • They have the task of surveying the river borders between U.S. and British territory, making a map of the land, and deciding on ownership of disputed areas.
  • The rest will sound familiar, from Article Four: the decisions of the commissioners are final, and any dispute between them will be settled by a third-party nation.
