Treaty of Ghent: Section 8: Seventh Article Summary

Lakefront Real Estate: Reprise

  • The two commissioners from Article Six get another task: survey the area between two of the Great Lakes, Huron and Superior, and the Lake of the Woods—which is mostly in Canada but touches part of modern-day Minnesota.
  • The Lake Commissioners—we'll call them the Lakers—get to decide on the coordinates, that is the latitude and longitude, of the international borders that touch the Lake of the Woods. These guys would probably have been happier if they had a GPS.
  • The Lakers have the same powers and responsibilities as the other commissioners, and have to settle disputes with a neutral country as judge.
