Hope Was Here Chapter 6 Summary

  • Braverman and four members of Mulhoney High School's Students for Political Freedom Coalition meet up to canvas the neighborhood for people willing to sign G.T.'s petition. The club's president, Adam Pulver, reminds them that only registered voters can sign.
  • More teenagers show up to volunteer; they've all been touched by G.T.'s kindness and generosity when hard times fell on their families.
  • At first, Hope has a tough a tough time getting people to sign the petition. One woman says there's no way she's going to vote for a man with no experience, especially one with cancer. Braverman chimes in and reminds the woman of all of the great things G.T. has done for the community, and the woman changes her mind.
  • Hope and Braverman team up after that. They go door to door, but most of the doors get slammed in their faces.
  • One woman tells them that her husband needs his job at the Dairy.
  • Braverman explains the deal with the Real Fresh Dairy. Rumor has it that the Dairy financed Millstone's campaign and he lets them do whatever they want in return.
  • They pass the mayor's new house. It's large and fancy, a bit excessive for a small-town mayor. Mayor claims his wife inherited a lot of money but Braverman thinks the Dairy gave him the money.
  • Braverman impresses Hope with his yo-yo tricks and he seems cuter than ever to her.
  • As they approach the Welcome Stairways diner, Hope asks Braverman how G.T.'s health is. Braverman explains that G.T. had been worn out from chemo and unable to work. Now he's waiting to find out if his cancer is in remission.
  • G.T. is sitting outside in front of the diner telling a group of older people why they should vote for a guy who's struggling to stay alive. He wants to do what's right while he still has the time.
  • Hope uses this opportunity to get a few more signatures for the ballot.
  • Turns out that not everyone in Mulhoney is honest. When Hope reads over the list of people who signed the petition, she finds the name Eleanor Roosevelt and "When hell freezes over."
  • Student volunteers Jillian and Brice run into the diner, excited about the 12 signatures they got. They're also creeped out by the guy in the hearse who's been following them and is now parked outside of the diner.
