Hope Was Here Chapter 8 Summary

  • Everyone's waiting for the Election Board to officially add G.T.'s name to the ballot.
  • G.T. gives Hope a tour of the diner's backyard, where he's planted several trees, each one representing an important person, place, or event from his past.
  • He tells Hope he likes thinking about how the trees will be around long after he's gone.
  • His words get Hope thinking about how she always writes "HOPE WAS HERE" on walls and boarded-up windows when she's getting ready to leave a place.
  • Adam shows up and announces that G.T.'s name didn't make it on the ballot. The Election board claims that 55 names on the petition had incorrect information.
  • Sid Vole thinks there is something fishy with the Election Board and suggests they go down there to confront them.
  • That evening, Hope, Braverman, and Lou Ellen are working at the diner. Hope thinks Lou Ellen looks like a wreck and asks her if everything is okay.
  • Lou Ellen tells Hope that her 14-month-old daughter is sick, but what she really means is that she's not developing the way a baby should.
  • As the tears start pouring from Lou Ellen's eyes, a bunch of burly men from the Elks Lodge fill the diner.
  • Lou Ellen is too upset to work, but feels badly about leaving Hope alone with the herd of hungry guys. Hope tells her to go home.
  • Hope takes care of all the customers and keeps the coffee flowing.
  • She puts on her best poker face as the Elk guys tell corny jokes and, with Yuri's help, perfectly delivers the perfectly cooked food to the rowdy crowd.
  • She earns big tips and a compliment from Braverman for a job well done.
