Character Analysis
Oscar is a college kid with a leather jacket and a former substance abuse problem. Basically, your classic bad boy. He's in bad shape, meaning stupid drunk, when Noah first meets him. (Oscar is the live model for his drawing class.)
Turns out all that partying is a symptom of his sadness over his dear departed mum. Oh yeah, uh huh, he's British. Bally well.
Oscar cleans himself up with the help of Guillermo Garcia, who takes the poor kid under his wing. ("They are father and son, just not by blood," according to Jude. [4.338]) Convinced that he and Jude are fated to fall in love, Oscar flirts his face off whenever she's around. He tries to back off when he figures out that she's a minor (he's 19 when they meet), but it's too late. Jude loves Oscar, and Oscar loves Jude. Yay?
