- Although her time in Thailand was awful, Foua still feels like her ordeal with Lia is far worse.
- Lia is returned to MCMC for examination. Peggy is heartbroken to see Lia like this—Neil was too shaken up to even come by. A doctor can't deal with it? Things must be bad.
- The relationship between the Lees and the doctors has improved, though that's mostly because the hospital is allowing them to perform more traditional Hmong treatments because they're "certain Lia would die anyway" (13.15).
- The family asks for Lia to be disconnected from the machinery and brought home. After much debate, a lot of planning, and a ton of help from Jeanine Holt, the doctors finally agree.
- As Lia is being prepared for release, the doctors tell Nao Kao that she will probably die within weeks. Upset because he "perceived the doctors' comments [...] as threats," Nao Kao grabs Lia and attempts to flee the hospital (13.31). The hospital security guards manage to stop him, but he almost assaults a nurse in the process.
- Luckily for everyone involved, Nao Kao calms down and the hospital releases Lia that night.
