How we cite our quotes: (Panel)
Quote #1
"Gasp" (7)
In this full-page panel, Rick wakes up in his hospital bed… and no one is around. It's eerie, because hospitals are normally full-to-bursting with activity. Where is everyone?
Quote #2
[Rick walks by an abandoned wheelchair.] (20)
As both The Walking Dead and Silent Hill know, it doesn't get much creepier than an empty wheelchair at the end of a long, vacant hallway. All that's missing is it tipped over with one wheel still spinning… Again, the amazing power of the image conveys thousands of words.
Quote #3
"Somebody help!! Anybody?" (26-27)
If a man calls for help in a hospital full of corpses and no one hears him, did he call for help at all?
Quote #4
"Gak." (139)
This sad, lonely corpse is one of the chapter's most horrifying images. How much does it remember? Can it think? Does it know it's completely alone and unable to move?
Quote #5
[A sign saying "Welcome to Georgia. Southern Hospitality" with a corpse in front of it.] (148)
This is quite a welcome as Rick rolls into Georgia. He doesn't see another living soul during the entire trip.
Quote #6
"So… you got a name." (183)
Rick is clearly going a little crazy from isolation. He's talking to a horse. This whole episode shows how powerful the need for connection and communication is. People will try to connect with anything that communicates or looks or sounds human. Think Siri, or Wilson in Cast Away.
Quote #7
"Here we are…" (192)
It was eerie enough seeing an abandoned hospital. It's even stranger to see an entire abandoned city, especially one as large as Atlanta. Rick and his horse seem to be the only living beings there.
Quote #8
[Everyone walks away from Amy's grave, but Andrea remains kneeling nearby.] (657)
Even though Andrea is a part of the camp group, Amy was her sister. Now that Amy is dead, Andrea feels very, very alone.
Quote #9
[Everyone leaves Jim lying against a tree.] (700)
This might just be the loneliest scene in the whole chapter. Jim wants to become a zombie, so the group takes him to a clearing and leaves him there. He's alone physically, and he's alone emotionally, because no one else can imagine what he's experiencing.
Quote #10
"I've got nothing, Rick!! No friends! No family!! No respect!! No f*****g life!!" (743)
Loneliness is the root of Shane's isolation. He has no one. And, due to his own actions (sleeping with Lori, punching Rick) he's losing the only friends he has, too. This is his lowest point. He really has no one.
