Doll Bones Chapter 8 Summary

  • The gang arrives at the park, which seems almost otherworldly. And damp. It's definitely damp.
  • Along with the candy and soda, Zach had the foresight to pack a sleeping bag, which he spreads out like a picnic blanket.
  • Poppy removes the Queen from her backpack. Yep, she's still creepy. Then Poppy lays out her other supplies, which include a small amount of food. Zach adds his supplies to the pile.
  • For some reason, he thinks back to when he first met Poppy and Alice: He and Poppy originally bonded over a Roald Dahl book, and Poppy met Alice at a carnival.
  • Poppy decides to take the first watch while Zach and Alice sleep. As he drifts off, though, Zach can't help but stare at the Queen, so he probes Poppy about the story. He wants to know if it's all a game, but she insists it's real.
  • Now Zach's dreaming about Eleanor Kerchner. In the dream, she's watching her father make china.
  • Now he's watching Eleanor's aunt be mean to Eleanor. This aunt is the worst—she doesn't let Eleanor go outside or play.
  • Zach wakes up to find that the Queen has somehow moved from Poppy's lap to right beside his head. Creepy. Poppy is asleep, having drifted off during her watch.
  • Also, someone (or something) has ripped the stuffing out of the sleeping bag and destroyed all the food. Needless to say, Zach is thoroughly creeped out.
