Marked Theme of Appearances

Welcome to Marked and its world filled with vampyres, where practically everyone is gorgeous and sexy. Once our main girl Zoey's Marked, she has to adapt to this new world of beautiful appearances—the halls of her public high school this most definitely is not.

It isn't just the folks around her who change, though: The crescent-moon Mark on Zoey's forehead changes how she looks, and the fact that her Mark is colored in as a fledgling means that she's different from everyone else. Zoey spends a lot of time worrying about how she looks in general, as well as wondering whether she's cute enough to attract the attention of Erik Night, the school hottie.

In other words, appearances aren't everything, but to a teenager who's also becoming a vampyre, they're pretty darn important.

Questions About Appearances

  1. Describe Zoey's appearance after getting Marked. Do you think she sounds beautiful? Like someone who stands out, or fits in?
  2. What do you think about the way Aphrodite's appearance is described? Does she sound pretty? How does her appearance correlate to her personality if at all?
  3. Who do you think is the hottest character in the book? Why?
  4. If you were a vampyre, what do you think the Mark would do to your features? And what do you think your eventual tattoos would look like?

Chew on This

Try on an opinion or two, start a debate, or play the devil’s advocate.

The Mark changes not only Zoey's appearance but also how she thinks about her identity.

When it comes to vampyres, you can't judge a book by its cover: Beautiful vamps can be ugly on the inside.
