Midwinterblood Part 6, Chapter 3 Summary

  • All in all, the Vikings had a good trip. They returned with all kinds of cool stuff and hardly lost anyone.
  • Oh, but there was this weird stranger with them.
  • As Eirik and Melle walked with their father, they saw another man hanging around. When he looked at the two children they felt like they were juicy steaks and he was a wolf eyeing them up. Uh-oh…
  • The children asked their father who the man was and their father told them his name was Tor (oh…) and that the kids were supposed to stay far away from him.
  • Tor looked like he might be taller and stronger than their dad, but he was also much older than their father. He'd clearly been out in the sun, too, because his skin was dark.
  • Melle and Eirik thought he was just some weird stranger who their father took pity on. But that wasn't quite right—the elders in town all seemed to know Tor, too. This guy had been to Bloed Isle (a.k.a. Blessed Island) before.
  • It was getting dark and everyone had to pull the ships onto land to hide out for the winter, so the entire town got into it and soon all the ships were safely in place.
  • There was one weird thing that happened, though: Melle remembered Tor taunting their father (whose name was Wulf). Maybe his men weren't so tough anymore if they couldn't pull a couple little Viking warships onto dry land?
  • Wulf told Tor to grab a rope and start working, but Tor just patted Eirik on the head and called him a "nice boy." Creepy.
  • Wulf got all up in Tor's face and everyone went totally silent. Finally, the chieftain told Tor to pick up a rope and get to work already. And this time Tor did. Phew.
  • When Tor left, Melle's father spat on the ground where he stood. He clearly has no love for Tor. Not that we blame him.
