Parrot in the Oven: Mi Vida Chapter 10 Summary

A Test of Courage

  • Manny has a confession for us: He's super scared about talking to girls. Oh really, Manny? Now, though, Manny wants to do something about it.
  • When he tells his friend Frankie that he wants to solve this talking-to-girls-phobia, Frankie says he has a solution. Manny and Frankie hang out with a handful of pals—Mondo, Eddie, Gody, Rita, and Patty—and Frankie tells Manny that if he makes it through the initiation, then he can join their group, the Callaway Projects gang. And if he joins the gang, then the grand prize is getting to smooch with Rita or Patty. So yeah, Manny is all for this plan.
  • Mondo starts bragging about how he's been to juvenile hall for stealing cars, but Manny is still excited about the whole thing.
  • Eventually, it's time for the initiation, which the gang calls the Test of Courage, and Manny really wants to pass. Basically, Mondo and Eddie start beating Manny up and everyone else watches and sometimes pitch in. Real nice, huh?
  • The whole time, Manny is thinking about finally getting to kiss a girl.
  • When it's all over, everyone backs off and Frankie tells Manny that he'll be all right.
