Parrot in the Oven: Mi Vida Chapter 11 Summary

Going Home

  • When Manny wakes up the next day, he's banged up as can be. He cleans his room so his mom won't be too on edge, and is generally a pretty happy camper since he got to make out with Rita last night.
  • He gets in a small tiff with Magda about her dying her hair, and then he successfully lies to his mom that he's going out to play baseball—he figures she knows he's lying, but she's not about to make a fuss.
  • Manny heads out to Long's Drugstore, where he meets up with his gang and they try to figure out what to do that day. The suggestions start flying: rob old ladies, steal something from the store, sneak into a movie—lots of pleasant stuff.
  • Mondo leaves to hang out with Patty, and Frankie leaves soon, too. Eddie really wants to take Manny with him on an adventure, and even though Frankie thinks it's a bad idea, Manny goes along with it.
  • Manny's actually heard a lot of scary stories about Eddie, but he doesn't think about these when he decides to tag along. Suddenly, though, Eddie decides it's time to rob a lady trying to get into her car. He's pretty rough with her, too, and the whole time Manny is stuck watching the mayhem go down.
  • The whole thing is awful, but the good news is that when Eddie runs away, Manny decides not to follow him. He realizes that he actually doesn't want to be like Eddie at all.
  • When cops come up to Manny, he's about to bolt away when a guy selling newspapers nearby tells Manny to stay put and then points the cops in the direction of Eddie and makes Manny look like a hero who tried to chase the thief down. Newspaper dude totally knows that Manny and Eddie were together, but it looks like it's our head honcho's lucky day.
  • On his way home, Manny isn't even bothered by the sight of the Garcia brothers.
  • And when he gets inside, well, let's just say that being home is just about the best feeling ever.
