Parrot in the Oven: Mi Vida Chapter 8 Summary

Family Affair

  • One day, Magda shows up at home super sick. Right away Mom figures out that Magda is pregnant and losing her baby.
  • Mom is so savvy when it comes to figuring this mystery out because she's lost two babies herself.
  • As Manny is helping his mom bring Magda inside, he doesn't really know what's going on, but when he opens up the bathroom door and sees that Magda has given birth to a super premature baby, he figures the whole thing out.
  • Magda, Manny, and Mom all head to the hospital. Needless to say, there are lots of tears on the bus ride there.
  • At the hospital, Magda and her mom and Manny have a really hard time getting anyone to help them.
  • In the waiting room, they sit next to a couple. The husband has a cut on his head from getting hit by a pipe on a plumbing truck, and the wife is a nervous wreck, which makes Manny super anxious in turn.
  • Things go from bad to worse when Magda needs to go to the restroom but then faints. Just like she was when they arrived, again the receptionist is about as helpful as dirt. Oh, and she's really judgmental, too. Stay classy, lady. She says that they can't see a doctor yet, so they get Magda into a wheelchair and take her back to the waiting room.
  • The wife of the man with the cut on his head is nice, though, and gets Mom some coffee. But then the lady's rude when one of Mom's tears touches her. You win some, you lose some, we suppose.
  • We don't hear about the doctor's visit, so the next thing we know, the group is back home and trying to sleep. Manny can tell that Magda isn't doing well when he hears her moaning and sees how sweaty she is. Mom is trying to figure out how to deal with the high fever, but no one wants to wake Dad since they haven't told him what happened. This bunch is in quite the pickle.
  • Manny tries to convince Mom that they need to wake Dad and take Magda back to the hospital, but she won't budge—in fact, she gets so annoyed at Manny that she even hits him and yells at him about not having money to go to the hospital.
  • All of a sudden Dad wakes up. Uh oh… But it's actually not that bad. He puts Magda in a bath and she gets better. Now that's a twist.
