Parrot in the Oven: Mi Vida Chapter 3 Summary

Charity

  • Mom wants Manny to go to the best high school possible, and this means going to the school on the other side of town, so she's put Manny on a mission to get his grades up so he can transfer.
  • At school, Manny runs into his old history teacher, a dude named Mr. Hart. Mr. H seems pretty cool, and he asks Manny how his summer has been and tells him that he's a smart kid; he insists on giving Manny a ride home.
  • Before they leave, Manny and Mr. H stop by his classroom. Mr. Hart offers Manny some money for school supplies, and even though Manny says no, Mr. H gives him twenty bucks all the same.
  • On the ride home, Manny ogles the nice houses they drive by. By the time they get to the projects where he lives, Manny really wants Mr. H to drop him off in the back instead of in the main lot.
  • Poor Manny doesn't get his way, though, and Mr. H pulls up in the lot where Dad is there to see the whole thing go down. And Dad is peeved as can be. Manny tells us that Dad doesn't trust white guys, so Mr. Hart is low on Dad's list of favorites. Needless to say, when Manny and Mr. H show up, Dad goes back and forth between giving Manny the evil eye and looking like a cool and collected dude to Mr. H.
  • After Mr. H leaves, though, Dad's anger goes through the roof—and he grabs Manny's shirt by the pocket and snatches the twenty bucks.
