The Sting Scene 4 Summary

  • Johnny heads away from Luther's with his other partner, talking about how much it stinks that Luther is getting out of the con game.
  • Out of nowhere, a car cuts in front of Johnny and his friend and Detective Snyder jumps out to corner Johnny in an alley. He tells Johnny the word on the street is that Johnny scored some money off the mob and that people are looking for him.
  • When Johnny gives him guff, the detective starts roughing him up.
  • Finally, Snyder tells Johnny that the man he conned (good old Suit-and-Fedora Guy) works for Doyle Lonnegan and that Johnny will be lucky if he lives to see next week. That's why Snyder wants Johnny to pay him his (Johnny's) share of the score or Snyder will turn him over to the mob.
  • Johnny opens his wallet and hands Snyder all the money he's got. Then Snyder gets back in his car and takes off. We only find out afterward that Johnny gave him counterfeit money.
  • Johnny takes off to call Luther and warn him about the mob looking for him. He knows that if Snyder already knows about him, then everybody does.
  • There's no answer on the phone at Luther's, so Johnny makes a run for his place. By the time he reaches it, though, Luther is already dead.
