So, Deb, couple of vocab words for you.
- 00:17
What is metadata?
- 00:19
So, before we talk about metadata, let's talk about data.
- 00:22
Data is the photo you post to Instagram.
- 00:26
Data is your status update on Facebook.
- 00:31
The metadata is everything about that data.
- 00:36
So when you say you're getting so meta about something, you're talking about it.
- 00:39
So the metadata for that Instagram photo
- 00:43
is the location where you took the picture,
- 00:46
what time you took the picture, what time you posted the picture,
- 00:50
where you posted the picture from,
- 00:52
what computer you were on when you posted it,
- 00:55
the IP address of that computer.
- 00:57
All these little things that we think,
- 00:59
"Oh, hey, I'm just on my iPhone.
- 01:01
I'm gonna load this up to Instagram."
- 01:02
It's not just the photo that makes its way onto the Internet.
- 01:05
It's all of the information about that photo.
- 01:08
Right, and even Facebook has an automatic
- 01:10
posting feature, I think most of them do,
- 01:12
where it'll actually say what city you were in
- 01:14
when you took the photo
- 01:16
and where you were when you posted it
- 01:17
- and what time, and so on. - Yeah.
- 01:18
So, some of that metadata shows up
- 01:19
for everyone to see right away.
- 01:21
So I post something on Facebook and it says,
- 01:23
"Deb Tennen was in Mountain View, California and posted this."
- 01:26
You're not expecting that.
- 01:27
But there's a ton of data that's saved
- 01:30
that Facebook knows about, Mark Zuckerberg knows about.
- 01:33
But you can't see -- The public eye can't see.
- 01:36
Yeah, and whether or not you agree with it,
- 01:38
whether or not you think it's Big Brother
- 01:39
or just the government doing its job,
- 01:41
it's there. It exists.
- 01:43
And once that metadata exists,
- 01:45
it doesn't go away.
- 01:46
So this is another thing.
- 01:47
We always say the Internet doesn't forget, right?
- 01:49

- 01:50
You post something. Even if you delete it,
- 01:52
take it away, even if that
- 01:54
image is no longer on the Internet,
- 01:57
all the information about it is.
- 01:59
And that image can be found as well.
- 02:01
So anything you post online, even if you delete it,
- 02:04
it's still out there somewhere.
- 02:05
[ groans ] Could be ugly. Okay, so watch your click.
- 02:08

- 02:10
What is metadata and why is it important?
