Respecting Adults...a la Shmoop.

00:07

Penelope Powers is all about fighting… “The Man.”

00:10

That would be… every man. Every one of ‘em over the age of about twenty. [Penelope angry as lots of people are stood together]

00:15

In fact, she even started a club called “The Man Fighters.”

00:18

For a while there was some confusion, and she was getting a lot of sign-ups from guys [Two men fighting]

00:22

who were looking to get into boxing…but she cleared it up with some new signage.

00:26

The club’s message is simple: “Kids are cool, adults drool.”

00:30

In Penelope’s eyes, adults are behind the root of every problem. [Penelope reflecting on adults causing all problems]

00:34

They fight and argue among themselves…

00:36

They create rules and laws that keep kids from enjoying themselves… simply because [Little girls enjoying a merry-go-round]

00:40

they’re so grumpy and disappointed with their own lives that they’ll do whatever

00:43

it takes to keep anyone else from having fun. [Little girl drawing]

00:46

Not to mention that they’re just… old and ugly and gross.

00:50

So far, three other kids, Huey, Dewey and Fred, have joined “The Man Fighters.” [Huey, Dewey and Fred outside the Man Fighters Club]

00:55

They’re equally as upset with the way things are, and are sick and tired of adults getting

00:59

to decide how every aspect of their lives play out.

01:02

Fast forward twenty years… [Clock ticks forward rapidly]

01:05

The Man Fighters is still in business. Yeah, it’s a little shocking.

01:09

The treehouse has seen better days. [A tree house with 'The Man Fighters' sign]

01:11

But through thick and think, the four of them have hung together, sticking it to the big people…

01:16

…until one day, they suddenly realize… they ARE the big people. [Penelope, Huey, Dewey and Fred grown up]

01:20

When they weren’t looking, they went ahead and grew up.

01:23

They’ve become “The Man”.

01:24

All of a sudden…all the stuff adults do is starting to make some sense to them.

01:29

They’ve gotten older, gotten jobs, gotten married, had kids…

01:32

…and the various stresses of responsibility and obligation have sunk in.

01:36

They realize now that some rules are set, not just to stomp out fun and be fuddy-duddies… [A herd of sheep running through a field]

01:41

…but to preserve order, to keep the peace, and to protect the innocent, and all that kinda stuff.

01:46

They realize that all the stuff they used to say to their parents…about how they’re [Penelope thinking about what she used to say to her parents]

01:50

going to be different when they grow up…

01:52

…they’re now hearing their kids say to them. [Penelope and her child arguing]

01:54

And they’re hearing themselves dole out punishments and time-outs and curfews…

01:58

Oof. Might be time to close the treehouse doors at last. [Treehouse with a closed sign]

02:02

It hits Penelope that kids and adults are different types of people…but they are both people. Just different versions of each other. [Adults in golf clothing and kids together]

02:09

Adults have gone through decades more of life experience, and it’s shaped and changed

02:13

them. Sometimes for the better.

02:14

They aren’t always right about everything. But most of them are just stumbling along [Man stumbling along on a hike in a mountain]

02:17

their own path as they take the same journey their kids will some day…

02:21

…and they’re doing their best to…do their best. [Girl using a tablet in a car]

02:25

Regardless, the very fact that they’ve put in the time and taken that journey makes adults

02:28

deserving of some respect.

02:30

Unfortunately…that’s only hit Penelope now…now that she hasn’t spoken to her [Life hits Penelope and she falls to the floor]

02:34

parents in ten years and has made life difficult for herself by getting in the face of every

02:37

authority figure she’s ever encountered.

02:39

Ah, well. Maybe there’s still hope for Huey, Dewey and Fred… [Huey, Dewey and Fred stood together]
