Common Core Standards

Grade 2

Reading RL.2.7

Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.

This standard is an upgraded version of its first-grade counterpart. In first grade, students are only expected to make surface-level observations about how the illustrations or descriptions and the actual story are connected; in second grade, they have to be a little more thorough when they talk about those two things (such as being able to tell if a character is happy or sad based on the illustration).
