Scholarship Qualifications

With so many Division-I baseball teams out there, the NCAA limits each school to 11.7 scholarships per team. That keeps the bigger and wealthier schools from hogging all the talent, which kind of goes against that whole "fair competition" thing.

On top of the physical requirements, your brain needs to be up to the challenge, as well. Thankfully, they're not asking it to take an at-bat—that could get messy. The NCAA has some specific guidelines on the kind of grades you're going to have to make if you want to qualify for a scholarship:

Four years of English
Three years of math
Three years of social sciences
Two years of natural sciences
One additional year of English, math, or science courses
Four additional years of extra courses

You typically need to have an average 2.3 GPA in all of these courses if you want to keep hitting. And of course, you're not allowed to take any payment or gifts while you're an athlete. That is most definitely against the rules, and will result in tears and hurt feelings all around.

Generally speaking, don't neglect your studies just because you're the second coming of Reggie Jackson on the field. Keep the grades up while you play and you'll land that scholarship the way you planned.
