How It All Goes Down
- Marie is quite upset and thinks Treadstone killed Peter. When Bourne hears that he was shot in the throat, though, he says it's Carlos, though he's not sure how he knows that.
- Time for research. Marie and Bourne go to a bookstore that has indexed magazines and check out Carlos.
- Turns out Carlos does in fact kill people by shooting them in the throat. How did Bourne know? Was Bourne one of Carlos's soldiers? Bourne and Marie aren't sure they want to know.
- We get to read a Potomac Quarterly article that tells us all about how deadly Carlos is.
- The article says his name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, and it connects him to every bad thing ever, up to and including the assassination of President Kennedy. It's not clear whether it's the Potomac Quarterly engaged in rampant sensationalism, or whether that's Ludlum himself. Quite possibly, it's both.
- After Marie's done reading the article, she asks Bourne questions about it. He hasn't read it, but he seems to know pretty much everything about Carlos there is to know.
- Bourne insists he must have been one of Carlos's soldiers who had a falling out with his boss. Marie tells Bourne she doesn't believe it, because he's just too darn good a person.
- Also, Marie argues that if he were an ex-minion, he'd be afraid of Carlos and would be running away from him rather than hanging around Paris, where Carlos is based. (We confess to that we're totally confused about what kind of amnesia this dude has.)
- Marie and Bourne go to meet the bankers and get the money transferred.
- Dennis Corbelier calls. He oddly doesn't know that Peter has been killed. However, he found out that the phone number on the fiche went, unexpectedly, to a fashion house called Les Classiques, associated with the designer René Bergeron.
- Bourne goes out to collect his money. He stakes out the bank in a taxi and sees the armored car leave.
- Bourne sees the armored truck slow down and decides it's a trap. He pays the taxi driver to tell the folks in the truck that he's waiting for them and then ambushes them as they come out.
- One of Carlos's goons is in the truck. He's a man named Johann who saw Bourne in Zurich. Bourne kills him, grabs the money, and skedaddles.
