The Bourne Identity Chapter 6 Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • While Marie drives, Bourne tries to figure out how he's going to get out of Zurich and on to Paris (even though he's not sure why he wants to go to Paris). He figures that train stations and airports will be watched and that the bad guys will be looking for the car. Luckily, he's got a bunch of money.
  • Marie begs Bourne to let her go. Instead, he rifles through her purse. Questioning her, he learns she's a high-powered Canadian government economist.
  • Bourne has Marie drive back to the hotel. In the meantime, the book of matches in her purse has pricked his memory, and he recalls a restaurant, though he doesn't know why.
  • Back at the hotel parking lot, Bourne explains that he's going to steal another car.
  • Bourne learns the name of the restaurant he's looking for from a parking attendant he bamboozles, and then he steals a car as promised.
  • Bourne and Marie go to the restaurant in question, the Drei Alpenhäuser. Marie tries to escape, but Bourne catches her. He realizes he's willing to kill her if she tries again.
  • In the restaurant, Marie keeps asking Bourne why they're there, and he keeps saying he doesn't know, because he's got amnesia. But we know she knows he doesn't know… How's that for dramatic irony?
  • Bourne recognizes a fat man, who comes over and begs him to leave and not endanger the restaurant. He also tells him that he had a contact named Chernak and reveals where Chernak's apartment is.
  • Big revelations: the fat man says that Bourne was an assassin that he passed him money six months ago, just before a famous man was killed.
