Feed Chapter 30 Summary

nudging again

  • That night, after his meat farm date with Violet, Titus has bad dreams.
  • He sees a series of images, sort of like a movie played inhis head, of some bad stuff going down in another country. Blood-stained khakis (a steal at only $150!) and a riot in front of a factory. Protestors with signs showing a little cartoonish devil with bolts of electricity, sitting inside a skull.
  • And now there's scenes of environmental degradation and apitiful, maimed animal. We almost expect an Al Gore voice-over along with the crooning of Sarah McLachlan.
  • The last image that Titus is treated to is of what appearsto be the Middle East, people "praying over missiles," and a little boy being hit in the face with a gun.
  • Suddenly, Violet's chatting him over the feed. It seems something similar has just happened to her.
  • Titus dismisses it as probably being a corporation, andViolet calls tech support to ask to have the snoopy intrusion to her feed tracked.
  • Looped into this conversation, Titus overhears Violet talking to Nina, a FeedTech representative.
  • And this should sound familiar: due to the large volume ofcustomer inquiries and calls they are currently experiencing, Violet cannot get help with her request right now.
  • So, Nina has sent her virtual double, an "automatedintelligence" (30.32), to speak with Violet instead.
  • Remember when Violet and Titus tried to resist the feed bychecking out lots of products, but not buying any of them? Well, that's starting to look like not such a good idea now. Nina, the virtual tech support chick, ignores Violet's pleas to track down whoever tried to hack into her feed, and instead focuses on getting Violet to make up her mind about purchasing decisions.
  • Violet has some very choice words to say to Nina, and issuper frustrated that she can't get any help.
  • Titus falls asleep to music from the feed and images of women petting his hair.
