- Violet is lying in bed, with lots of instruments attached to her. Her head is shaved, and there are tons of scars, where they tried to fix her.
- Her eyes are open.
- Titus expects to feel something, since he spent lots of time with Violet previously, but he doesn't feel anything. Not even a sense of tragedy.
- Her dad comes in and starts telling Titus about how it was when she deteriorated, and started to be unable to speak, and then to lose her memory.
- He tells Titus how he never wanted to get the feed for Violet, but he realized Violet would need it in order to function in the world.
- Violet's dad feels guilty because he had her feed installed so late. Plus, he didn't buy her the best-of-the-best model.
- Titus says he's sorry that this happened to Violet, but this seems to anger her dad. He thinks it's somehow Titus's fault, since he took her to the nightclub where the hacking happened.
- Violet's dad begins bombarding Titus with super unpleasant memories of Violet's deterioration. Titus sees Violet paralyzed, making animal noises when she can't move, and soiling herself when she can't control her bodily functions.
- Now Violet's dad really rips into him. He's particularly angry that Violet apologized to Titus after their big fight.
- He tells Titus to go play with the other eloi, but Titus doesn't understand what that means. He asks Violet's dad to tell him, but dad wants Titus to look it up for himself.
- More yelling, until Titus finally heads home, where he rips his clothes to shreds.
- He then orders pair after pair of pants, until he is out of credit. He sits in his room, feeling the shipments moving toward him.
- At sunrise, he puts on some clothes and goes up to the surface to watch the sun rise over the world.
