  • Their mountain getaway is located in a college town, and the mountains are covered with cables.
  • Titus and Violet check into a cheap hotel under false names: Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
  • Both of them joke around about how this is the type of a hotel that is usually features prominently in urban legends.
  • While the two get dinner at a pizza joint, they noticed a protest is going on at the campus. The waiters have no idea what it's about.
  • Titus realizes that he's starting to dread every second he will have to spend with Violet that night.
  • When they return to the hotel, Violet immediately tries to put the moves on Titus, but he's not having it. He just can't get into it, and hopes she'll get the signal.
  • Turns out she doesn't, since Violet ratchets up her attempts at seduction.
  • No matter what she tries to do, though, Titus can't... perform.
  • Finally, Titus admits to her that he can't do it, since he keeps picturing her already dead. Yeah, that'll put a damper on it.
  • Titus then breaks up with her.
  • Hurt and angry, Violet lets Titus know that she came into the world alone, and didn't really want to leave it all by herself.
  • Enough is enough. Titus bites back in anger and frustration. He doesn't like how Violet seems to be putting this whole guilt trip on him.
  • Plus, she's been talking like their relationship is forever, when—for him—it was only for a few months.
  • Turns out, he's been pretty angry at Violet for having this kind of touristy attitude toward him and his friends. Like she is so much better than they are, but she wants to be like them without really think about how they really are.
  • Sure, they may not be geniuses and out to save the world, but they have their own lives and problems that Violet hasn't really considered.
  • Violet goes off on this whole thing about how the world is falling apart and they are just ignoring it, and discovers she really doesn't like Titus at all when he suggests she finish her "sermon" in the car. On the way home.
  • Violet cries, and her hand stops working.
  • As they drive home, Titus is almost willing to apologize to her, but doesn't want to take the chance she'll say something sarcastic.
  • When they arrive at her house, Titus tries to help her down out of the upcar, but she refuses. Instead, her father runs out to help her.
  • Violet also refuses her father's help.
  • Titus goes home.
  • Months later, he realizes that the last words Violet ever spoke to him were "Oh, s***," back at the hotel, when Violet realized that the room still needed to be paid for.
