Hoot Theme of Lies and Deceit

There are tons of different kinds of lies. White lies. Blatant lies. Pretty little lies. Sometimes even half-truths count. And there's a lot of lying going on in Hoot—in fact, everyone's doing it.

If they're not lying, they're trying to intentionally deceive someone (which is just as bad). Roy's parents are actually the only ones we see being truly open and honest. So it's not really that surprising when they are the ones who help Roy effectively combat Mother Paula's. And all those other liars learn a very important lesson: the truth will always come out.

Which is a good lesson for all of us to learn.

Questions About Lies and Deceit

  1. Who tells the biggest lie in Hoot?
  2. Roy tells his mother he would lie for Mullet Fingers again if his friend's life was in danger. Does it make it okay if Roy is honest about lying? Why or why not?
  3. Why does Curly go along with the story that there aren't any owls on the property when he knows there are?
  4. What's the difference between Mullet Fingers saying he's Roy at the hospital and Dana saying he's Roy when getting caught by Curly and Delinko?

Chew on This

Try on an opinion or two, start a debate, or play the devil’s advocate.

Some of the lies told in Hoot are purposefully deceiving while others have good intentions behind them.

The adults who lie in Hoot usually do it for selfish or petty reasons, contrasting the fibs told by Roy and Mullet Fingers who try to help each other and the owls.
