How we cite our quotes: All quotations are from Independence Day.
Quote #1
DAVID: You gotta leave the White House.
CONNIE: This is hardly the time or the place to be having that same old discussion.
DAVID: You don't understand. You gotta leave Washington.
Connie thinks that David has arrived to start a fight with her about her career, but David is just trying to get her physically out of the White House. Sure, he's willing to hang out and try to alert the President to the aliens' intentions, too, but he's mainly there to get his estranged wife out of town.
Quote #2
JASMINE: There you go, there he goes, thinking you're all that. But you are not as charming as you think you are, sir.
STEVEN: Yes, I am.
Jasmine and Steve share a tender moment before he heads off to the base to help battle the aliens. These two are clearly crazy about each other. (Or maybe, Steve is just crazy about himself…)
Quote #3
THE PRESIDENT: I really want you out of Los Angeles.
FIRST LADY: You're staying there to keep people calm. It's the right thing to do. I'm not going to let them criticize you for it.
PRESIDENT: I appreciate your trying to help me.
FIRST LADY: Liar. Stick to the truth. That's what you're good at.
The President and the First Lady have a sweet, teasing dynamic that's fully on display here. She's refusing to leave so she can finish her interviews/help keep up a brave face on behalf of the administration, and while the President tries to pretend to be appreciative, she knows better. Unfortunately, that decision ends up costing her her life.
Quote #4
JULIUS: There's still love there, I think.
CONNIE: Love was never a problem.
JULIUS: All you need is love. John Lennon. Smart man. Shot in the back, very sad.
Julius is trying to push Connie and David back together, but Connie isn't biting. Apparently, Connie and David parted ways largely due to different professional paths, and not because there was a lack of feeling on either side.
Quote #5
CONNIE: Well, if it makes any difference, I never stopped loving you.
DAVID: But that wasn't enough, was it?
Connie and David are having a heart-to-heart about their relationship. Connie obviously still loves him, but doesn't think that's a good enough reason for them to be together. Yet.
Quote #6
STEVE: Listen, before we do this, I just want to say I'm sorry.
JASMINE: Sorry for what, babe?
STEVE: I should have done this a long time ago.
Although Steve never says it outright, it appears that he had been holding back from committing to Jasmine, probably because of her profession (as an exotic dancer) and the risks it posed to his career goals. However, after worrying she was dead and then finding her faithfully nursing the First Lady, he realizes he is ready to commit to her after all.
Quote #7
PRIEST: Dearly beloved, we're gathered here in the sight of God, and in the presence of these witnesses, to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony. Any person who can show good cause why these two should not wed, please speak now or forever hold your peace.
Before Steve and David go up on their mission to mess with the aliens' computers, Steve and Jasmine work in a quickie wedding. While serving as witnesses, David and Connie seem to reaffirm their love as well—there's actual hand holding. (Hey: it's PG-13.)
Quote #8
CONNIE: Listen, be careful, okay?
MAN IN LAB COAT: It's time.
STEVE: I love you.
JASMINE: I love you.
As David and Steve leave for their mission, Connie and David share a hug, and Steve and Jasmine say their gooey goodbyes. Even though Connie and David don't say, "I love you," it's clearly implied.
