- Juan Preciado is out on the streets of Comala, remembering the way his mother described the town to him, and someone appears and asks him what he's doing. He finds he can't say Pedro Páramo's name, so he says that he's there to find his father.
- The person invites Juan into a half-demolished house, where a man and a woman are waiting. He asks if they're dead, but they just think he's drunk.
- The woman is completely naked. Juan just wants to go to sleep, so they all decide to crash out.
