- Amon lines up the Jewish women to choose a domestic servant for his house. He chooses Helen Hirsch from the line. She shivers in the cold.
- A commotion is heard from a nearby construction. A Jewish woman approaches Amon against her SS guard's command.
- She explains that there's a problem with the construction of the barracks and that it must be torn down and rebuilt or it's going to sink and collapse.
- Amon sees that the woman's an engineer. He's impressed. He orders her to be shot on sight.
- He then follows her suggestion because he won't allow a Jew to argue with an SS officer even though he could have used her skills.
- Helen stands alone and terrified.
