The Color of Magic The Color of Magic / Chapter 21 Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • In the cellar, Broadman scatters candles and kindling on the floor before attacking an oil barrel with an ax. He mutters, "Inn-sewer-ants" (1.21.2).
  • Upstairs, Withel takes a hit in the chest from one of Rincewind's gold grenades; Ymor sends one of his ravens to attack, but Luggage gobbles it up in midair.
  • The candlewheel falls from the ceiling and Rincewind takes the opportunity to hop into the rafters above, only to find Twoflower up there whispering about how exciting the whole scenario is.
  • The thieves, assassins, and trolls realize they are in a room "made treacherous of foothold by gold coins and containing something, among the suddenly menacing shapes in the semidarkness" (1.21.9), so they all run for the door.
  • Rincewind and Twoflower wait for everyone to leave and then scramble down. On their way out the door, Rincewind asks the other if he smells oil before being tripped by Withel.
