The Prince and the Pauper Chapter 3 Summary

Tom's Meeting with the Prince

  • The next day, Tom wakes up and decides to wander around London.
  • Tom ends up right in front of Westminster Palace, staring through the bars and hoping to catch a glimpse of a real-life prince.
  • Well, today is Tom's lucky day. It seems that he gets a little bit too close to the gate at Westminster Palace, and the guards seize him.
  • Just at that moment, Prince Edward storms over to the gate and makes the guards unhand his new friend.
  • Just like that, Prince Edward leads Tom into the palace, and they start talking. They bond over the fact that they both have abusive dads. Well, there's an awkward icebreaking sesh.
  • Eventually, Tom gets to tell Prince Edward about Offal Court. Since he has no idea what it's really like to be poor, the prince thinks Tom's life sounds like the best thing ever. So they make a deal: they'll swap roles.
  • After the boys exchange clothes, they realize that they look almost like identical twins.
  • Prince Edward notices a bruise on Tom Canty's hand from the rough guard. He runs out of the palace to go discipline the guard and gets a rude awakening: without all of his fancy clothes, he's just another gutter punk.
