The Prince and the Pauper Chapter 6 Summary

Tom Receives Instructions

  • Tom goes back to his fancy room. Elderly and high-ranking men surround him. It makes him uncomfortable.
  • Later the Lord St. John comes in and tells Tom that the king has commanded him to hide his confusion about any royal matters and to pretend that everything is perfectly normal.
  • After all of that, Tom gets to play with some friends—not just any friends, but Lady Elizabeth (a.k.a. the future Queen Elizabeth I) and the Lady Jane Grey. They notice that the "prince" doesn't seem to be doing too well: nearly every second, Tom makes some kind of misstep. But he's starting to get better at this whole prince business.
  • It's time for bed, and an entire army of people comes to help undress Tom. While he's gone, the Lord St. John and Lord Herford talk about how weird it is that he's suddenly gone crazy. But that doesn't last very long, given that's it's illegal to talk about it and all.
