- When Opal and Winn-Dixie visit the library, Opal worries because Winn-Dixie 1) hogs the only working fan, and 2) will lose his fur with all that air blowing on him.
- Miss Franny says he can be a fan-hog all he wants, and he won't go bald because of it. Sometimes as they visit, Miss Franny has "a fit," when she stops talking, gets forgetful, and shakes (15.2).
- In order to protect her, Winn-Dixie leaves the fan and sits up straight by her side until it ends. Then he flops back down in front of the fan. It reminds Opal of how she has to protect Winn-Dixie from running away during thunderstorms. She also thinks about Gloria Dump.
- Opal wants to find a way to comfort her too, so that she won't have to be alone. It's creepy, hearing all the mistake bottles clank.
- She decides to read her a book. Presto!
- Miss Franny, Librarian Extraordinaire, recommends Gone With the Wind. It's about the Civil War, and Miss Franny brags that her great-grandfather, Littmus W. Block, fought in that war. Do we hear another story coming?
- Winn-Dixie promptly falls asleep, and Opal sits down to listen. But just before Franny starts, the door bursts open, and who walks in but that pinchy-faced Amanda Wilkinson. She's ready for another book and even ignores Winn-Dixie's doggy smile.
- Miss Franny won't let her interrupt so easily and invites Amanda to have a seat. Amanda pretends to be annoyed and refuses to sit down, but Opal knows she's totally interested. Miss Franny tells her great-grandfather's story.
