David Caroni is another decent kid who Brother Leon manipulates. Leon gives him an F (something Caroni has never even seen before on one of his papers) in order to blackmail him into confessing that The Vigils are behind Jerry's initial refusal to sell chocolates. Caroni feels really bad about this encounter. He asks a crucial question, "If teachers did this kind of thing, what kind of world could it be?" (16.45).
