Character Analysis
Sir Hugo is Daniel's guardian. Daniel spends the bulk of his young life convinced that Sir Hugo is secretly his dad – and actually, everyone else thinks so, too. He is a kind, understanding man who wants to give Daniel the best opportunities. He marries Lady Mallinger on the late-ish side of his life. Even though Sir Hugo has a lot of great property and money, his wife and daughters can't inherit it, so everything is going to go to Grandcourt.
