For a moment there it seems Bella admits to herself and to us that she knows Edward is jealous of Jacob and that he's capable of hurting him. But then she vehemently rejects that thought. Do you think she's trying to protect a false image of Edward?

[Jacob to Edward:] "The jealousy… it has to be eating at you. You can't be as sure of yourself as you seem. Unless you have no emotions at all." (22.102)

Jacob seems to imply that jealousy is a natural human emotion. Is that true and, if so, should you suppress your jealousy or is it natural to act on it?

So the opposite of jealousy seems to be selflessness. But could Edward's selflessness also be construed as calculated selfishness? Does pure selflessness exist?
