Missing May is certainly not a story about skeptics. Pretty much all the main characters—from Cletus, to Uncle Ob, and even to Summer—take it as a fact of life that there are things that can't be explained. They all believe in ghosts, angels, and things that go bump in the night. Maybe that's why no one really bats an eye when Uncle Ob declares that he feels Aunt May's presence and they're all going to find a way to communicate with her. Instead, they take his words at face value and do everything that they can to help him get in touch with May, because they don't want to believe that she's totally gone either.

Even though they never reached the medium at the spiritualist church, the act of going on a big trip made Uncle Ob and Summer feel closer to Aunt May, just as they'd hoped.
As they get closer and closer to each other, Summer and Uncle Ob actually get closer to Aunt May rather than feeling farther apart from her now that she's dead.
