Knut is kind of like the friendly version of Filch in Harry Potter—he's the mostly silent handyman who works at the academy and keeps everything running. He may keep to himself at Tutor Olana's behest, but he still reaches out to Miri in order to let her know that he doesn't think the girls are being fairly treated. When Miri asks him questions about Asland, he doesn't act like it's a better place than Mount Eskel—he makes sure that Miri knows that he respects Mount Eskel and its beauty. What a nice guy.
