The Prince and the Pauper Chapter 22 Summary

A Victim of Treachery

  • So now Edward is back with the thieves.
  • One of the thieves, Hugo, doesn't like Edward so much, since he ruined his begging gig.
  • So once the thieves have their hands on Edward again, Hugo starts to mess with Edward.
  • Edward being Edward, he's not having it. He and Hugo start fighting, and he wins... since he's actually a trained swordsman.
  • Hugo is not happy. He wants vengeance, and a few days later, he gets his opportunity.
  • Hugo tries to put a kind of fake skin sore on Edward, but one of the other thieves stops him.
  • Since it's now decided that Edward is not a very good beggar, the head of the thieves assigns him to the stealing division of this troop.
  • Hugo now has the perfect way to get his revenge on Edward: he'll get him thrown in jail.
  • Hugo steals a bundle from a woman, throws it in Edward's arms, and sets him up.
  • The woman accuses Edward of stealing her bundle. He denies it, but a whole mob of people starts to gather around him.
  • It's not until Miles appears on the scene that Edward is saved again.
