Jellicoe Road Chapter 12 Summary

  • Ben gets word that the Townies and the Cadets want to meet at the scout hall in town.
  • Territory war stuff is the last thing on Taylor's mind, but she goes anyway out of fear that Richard will take control of the Underground Community. Word that Taylor is losing control of her House has already spread far enough.
  • At the meeting, the three factions argue about who can have access to the sidewalks and water ways. The whole thing almost ends with another fight between Santangelo and Jonah, but Taylor steps in and breaks it up.
  • Santangelo lays out a proposal for the Club House where they open it to the public three nights a week for live music.
  • Taking Ben's advice, Taylor asks what's in it for her. Jonah drops an information bombshell: The Brigadier knew Taylor's mom and he knows a lot of other stuff as well. He tells Taylor that if they talk about water access and the Club House, he'll tell her what he knows.
  • Taylor responds by making a derogatory comment about Jonah killing his dad. Jonah pins her to the wall and the two of them almost get in a fight of their own.
  • On her way home, Taylor cries and tries to comfort herself by putting together the pieces of Hannah's book in her mind.
  • And just like that, we're conveniently back in Hannah's book. In this scene, Tate, Webb, and Fitz are banging on Narnie's door because she's threatening to commit suicide
  • Tate stays with Narnie and tells her about To Kill a Mockingbird, which they were supposed to read for class the next day.
  • In particularly, she tells her about Jem reading to old Mrs. Dubose, the morphine addict who wants to die clean, and how Jem is her painkiller as she waits for death.
  • Calling Tate "Jem," Narnie asks her to read to her, and says that someday, if Tate needs it, she will be Jem for her.
  • Back in Taylor's room, Taylor decides it's time to end the dying cat's misery. She takes it down to the river by Hannah's garden and drowns it.
  • She wakes up in her room the next morning and asks Raffaela to tell her what Taylor told her in the dorms when she first came to Jellicoe School.
  • Raffaela says the memory won't give her any information about her mother, but will just cause her to remember a lot of pain she doesn't need. She tells Taylor that she worries about her a lot, like she's going to do something to hurt herself.
  • The next day, Taylor makes up with the girls in her House, who promise to come get her if Hannah calls again.
