- On their way to the beach for a family outing to the beach, Narnie and Webb's parents die in a horrific car crash on the Jellicoe Road.
- Immediately following the crash, Tate, a young girl who was in the other car, crawls into the backseat to be with them. Later, a kid named Fitz rides by on his bike and saves them.
