Character Analysis
Hoyt is the last person on earth that Regan wants to work with in chemistry class, and for good reason. He's a total jerk and school bully, and has always made life difficult for Luna:
Hoyt screeched, "You f***ing pervert!" Loud. It attracted the attention of a couple of girls who were clomping down the stairs. Hoyt jabbed Luna's shoulder again and yelled, "Perv! You're a perv. I always knew it." (22.115)
He thinks that Luna is a pervert and a repulsive human being just because she's different. Because of his narrow-mindedness, Hoyt represents the worst of what Regan fears in public scrutiny—he represents all the people who will judge and act violently toward Luna.
