The Usual Rules Chapter 30 Summary

  • As the days go by, Carolyn starts staying over at Garrett's house more and more, and then she starts bringing over some of her favorite cacti.
  • Before Christmas break ends, Wendy finally admits to Garrett and Carolyn that she hasn't been going to school. To her surprise, they've already figured it out.
  • Garrett says he knows she'll be a good student when she's ready to go back, and he wanted her to have this time to heal from the events of 9/11. Aw.
  • Wendy decides to go back to school, so Garrett gives her a ride. She even goes to band and brings her clarinet with her. There, she meets a boy named Henry who is also a clarinet player.
  • Even though Wendy can't go and see Violet during the school day anymore, she invites her and Walter Charles over for dinner on Friday.
  • They spend the night, and then Carolyn drops them off at their apartment the next day. She mentions to Wendy that she feels herself getting attached to Violet and Walter Charles, but that she doesn't know if she should because she can't fix everything for them.
  • Wendy goes with Alan to visit Tim, but it's not a good day for him. He's not as engaged as he can be sometimes, and they only have one load of laundry for him to do at the laundromat.
  • Amelia calls to tell Wendy that she and Chief have broken up, and then she admits that they kind of did some sexual stuff—even though they didn't go all the way. Things sure are changing in their lives.
