Even though it's very mentally demanding work, wind techs don't need to be the next Stephen Hawking. Wind techs do need to be mentally sharp, physically fit, and overall quite capable. At the very least, a wind tech needs a high school diploma and some training (typically on-the-job training spanning the first twelve months) in electrical and hydraulic maintenance, braking systems, and computer technology (source).

If you want to ensure that you're as qualified as possible, you can get a certification in small wind tower installation from the Electronics Technicians Association (source).

To work with really large wind farms, you'll definitely need more specific experience. If, for instance, you wanted to design and run the computer systems that make up the communication network between wind turbines, you would need a background in electrical engineering.
